Hits & Misc. #03: Misc. Hits š¶
22 for ā22 š»
While I enjoy making playlists year-round, itās my year-end collection I look forward to the most. š„³ The annual survey consistently re-surfaces songs that were lost to the depths of my Spot*fy library and the whole thing quickly becomes a retroactive soundtrack to my year.
The ārulesā guiding the playlistās curation are simple: each song has to have been released that calendar year; the compilation should be as eclectic as possible; the sequencing has got to work.
I wrapped this yearās mix earlier this week and Iām excited to share these ā22 for ā22ā with you today!
š Give it a listen in its entirety here
I could easily pen paragraphs about each selection, but for the purposes of this newsletter Iāve taken a āless talk, more rockā approach and kept myself to a sentence (or two) for my reviews.
Blown Tire - Status/Non-Status
Not only is this one of my favourite singles of the year, itās also the first of three stalwart album-openers on the list. Inasmuch, itās a shoe-in to get this party started. šGrapejuice - Harry Styles
Hello. Sir Paul? Yes, this is Harry... Harry Styles. Iād like to re-imagine your mid-80s work for a little ditty Iām working on. Itās about wine and such. That cool?ā š¹Good Lord - Lecrae, Andy Mineo
The world can always use another song built around James Brown samples. šWhat Am I Without You (Single Mix) - Elbow
Elbow has written a song that sounds like an amusement park⦠and then given it some of the most tender lyrics of all time. Get ready for a rollercoaster. š¢illusions by the sea - Mike Edel
If this didnāt make the list for the āDoo, doo doo, do doāsā in the songās opening bars, it would still be included here for being the first song Iāve ever heard with the word āvermilionā in it. ā¤ļøš§”The Quiet Life - Timecop1983, Waves_On_Waves
If Cory Hartās Never Surrender isnāt the inspiration for this song you might as well stop reading now because it will have become clear I know nothing about music. āļøTriple Crown - Tona ft. Shad, Drezus
This š„ is up there with the Beastieās Sure Shot and Zamfirās The Lonely Shepherd when it comes to āflute jamsā that move me. š (And yes, Iām currently working on a Flute Jams playlistāsend me your faves.)Come on Through - Eamon
āDonāt need no invitation / donāt need no alibiāājust turn it up ā¬ļø!Ogiin - OMBIIGIZI
The conversation between the guitars toward the end of this track from the bandās Polaris Prize shortlisted debut āSewn Back Togetherā is as haunting as the verse that precedes it. šøHoly Water Hangover - Butch Walker
The venn diagram on this one consists of Elton John, Billy Joel⦠and rhinestones. āØLetās Watch the Grass Grow - Orions Belte, Ćyvind BlomstrĆøm
More like: āletās watch a time-lapse of the grass growing oh wow thatās amazing I canāt believe nature is so trippy.ā š¼Someone Elseās Cafe / Doomscroller Tries to Relax - Dawes
This one sprawls a bit, and thatās ok because it makes the refrain at the end so fully and completely worth the wait. š„Playing in a Band - Delicate Steve
I know itās only been one song since our last instrumental, but you wonāt mind one bit as you find yourself scrunching up your face and playing that air guitar like the coolest fool in school. šøBigger Than The Whole Sky - Taylor Swift
I want this song to break out of itself and then implode with a giant Jack Antonoff cacophony of a crescendo⦠but it never does, and itās that restraint that keeps me coming back for more. šŖ
Stop Before I Cry - Kevin Morby
The only way to adhere to the command in this songās title is to turn it off before itās over. š¢Dream On - Ben Rector
If the childrenās choir doesnāt get you all teared up, the (welcome) earnestness of it all surely will. š¤
Saturday Morning - Hello Kelly
I wake up with this song in my head Saturday thru Sundayāand thatās fine by me. ā°
Tell It All Brother - Skyway Man, Andy Jenkins
Songs like this will change your life if youāll let them work their subtle magic on you. š©Gratitude - Drew Holcomb & The Neighbours
Holcombās a songwriterās songwriter who doesnāt need fancy words or hip production to lead you where he wants you to go. That said, this particular recording has space for days and itās a pleasure to lose yourself between all those notes. š¶āāļøI Donāt Have It in Me (Acoustic) - River Woods
I have it on good authority this songās piano riffs were not inspired by Henleyās āThe End of the Innocenceā ā which makes the similarities all the more enjoyable. šÆāāļøCurtains - M. E. Netzke
Just close your eyes and listen to this one from the comfort of that cozy rocking chair by the fire in that little cabin on the edge of the forest that youāll be transported to before the first weathered verse has given way to the chorus⦠šŖOne Song Away (Live at Benaroya Hall) - Ivan & Alyosha
The original recording of this one aināt too shabby, but performed live alongside the Seattle Symphony Orchestra brings takes its subject matter to new heights.
šØBONUS!!!šØ
There were so many great covers released this year. Hereās seven of my faves.
Most of the Time - Sandra McCracken, Colin Hay
I never thought Iād hear a cover of Dylanās masterpiece that would stand up as well as Sophie Zelmaniās understated rendition. But then again, I never thought Iād hear it as a duet either. Wow. šSomething About What Happens When We Talk - Katie Pruitt
Something about what happens when you listen really close to the delay on Katieās vocals here-ere-ere-ere. And donāt even get me started about what happens when she takes the wheel from Lucinda at the end... ā©ļøPapa Was a Rollinā Stone - The Black Crowes
I tried to write something about this cover, but I couldnāt stop grooving. This song remains a master-class in building songs piece by piece by funky-ass piece. šIāve Got A Feeling (Live At The Empire State Building) - Norah Jones
The fact you can practically feel Norah smiling throughout this performance (verified here) makes the rooftop tribute that much more fun.š¼These Days - Cat Power
Cat Powerās prowess in re-working a well-known song was firmly established with 2008ās Jukebox; but even when sheās sticking close to the canon, itās the little things she adds to the mix that make such a big difference. In this case: her decision to slow things down and incorporate a whole lot of harmonies. šFive Years - Cowboy Junkies
Somebody loop this trackās drums for me so I can listen to it all year long. Also, Margo Timminsā take on Bowieās apocalyptic anthem is proof positive sheās one of a select few able to convince you sheās whispering in your ear even as sheās bellowing out the chorus. š¤«I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever) - Father John Misty
You canāt touch Stevieās original recordingābut you get points for trying. Also: I couldnāt resist wrapping the playlist with a callback to the scene from High Fidelity referenced in the intro to this newsletter š.
