BM No.6 🥱

It’s April, which means Baseball is back in all it’s boring glory. 💤

As the patron sport of our newsletter (with respect to all the anglers reading this), we’ve been looking forward to this one for a while. Despite MLB’s new rules, we’re confident the game will stay boring enough (relatively) to keep us devoted.

Here’s a few of our favourite recent articles and essays on the topic to enjoy between innings!

1. Confessions of a Baseball Fundamentalist: The Revolution Will Be Boring 🔨

This one from Arthur’s Sebastian Johnston-Lindsay includes some hilariously hot takes, but the following quote pretty much nails it on the head for us:

“Baseball isn’t here to be convenient for you. Rather, you have to be present for it. Baseball is played on a timescale that is outside our overburdened modern schedules, making it a beautiful and transgressive thing to behold in our current time-crunched epoch.

Watching baseball thus becomes a revolutionary act, one which runs contrary to societal expectations of timeliness and convenience. The length of a game depends solely upon probability and chance so the best practice is to sit down and enjoy it.”

2. Heading Home 🪕

Writer/Podcaster, Eddie Kaufholz hops on his BMX and pedals carefree through time with this reflection on the sport before skidding to a stop and throwing this fastball straight down the middle:

“Compared to the pace of an NFL or NBA game, the MLB is a banjo being lazily plucked on a river bank. But that rhythm of: pitch, snap into the catcher's glove, “strike!”, the soft murmur of a relaxed crowd, another pitch, the crack of a bat beckoning them to attention, and the smattering of applause as a runner reaches first–that’s just everything.”

We couldn’t agree with your more, Eddie.

3. The Most Spectacular Boring Plays of the Year 🥱

Turns out, a fair number of baseball’s best catches looked boringly routine last year

4. What’s New in MLB Logos and Uniforms for 2023 🧢

As designers, we can enjoy geeking out over uniform updates…but speaking as a member of the Boredom Society, it’s “exciting” to see only 1 of 30 teams is making big moves this year.

BS News & Updates 🧢

As you were 💤

We’ve been pretty bored with the BS over the past few months—which means we’re likely onto something 😉. So we’ll leave it at that for now and remind you that “from the fertile soil of inactivity: creativity bursts forth.” 🌱
